Exhibition "If your iron has broken..."

Presented by The Centre for Independent Social Research (CISR) and KONE Foundation (Finland)
Opening
April, 19th, 19:00
At Kunsthalle Nummer Sieben gallery (B. Zelenina, 21)
This exhibition is an art science project that unites them into one.

The participants of sociological research — sociologists, anthropologists, urbanists — perform as mediators of their research for the public and take first steps as artists.
Art projects are based on the results of the "Layered cake of Neighbourness" Russian-Finnish scientific project and affect different areas of research: "Neighborness in border areas", "Neighborness through time", "Neighborness in the megalopolis", "Digital neighborness" and "Neighborness in communes". Works are represented in videos, photos, installations, art objects, sound installations and performances.

Through artistic interpretations, scientists present topics that have impressed them in the process of working with the material and have caused analogies with their own life experiences. Acting as artists, they become the subjects of knowledge production and its interpreters through forms unusual for the scientific world at the same time. Ideas of art projects appeared in the course of individual work of researchers with the artist and curator in the field of contemporary art, Lera Lerner, and were created by the efforts of the researchers themselves in close cooperation with the artists of 'North 7' art group and Lera Lerner.

In this art-science project, art and social sciences, artistic and research understanding of the materials intersect. Such interdisciplinary practices are becoming increasingly popular in the world, where artists and scientists are looking for new languages of knowledge representation and new ways of interacting with a wider audience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
ON RESEARCH DIRECTIONS
The artwork at the exhibition presents the different directions of the
"Layered cake of Neighbourness" study
Direction 1
"Neighborness in the border areas"
We study the daily migration and neighborness practices of local residents of the Russian-Finnish border areas; in particular, people's perception of each other and the spaces of neighboring cities / countries.

Virpi Kaisto, Olga Brednikova. They study the neighboring relations of the border cities of Finland and Russia residents. They pay special attention to the use of the spaces of neighboring cities / countries and people's perception of each other.
Direction 2
"Neighborness through time"
The research focuses on former Finnish territories that are now parts of Russia. The relationship between former and current residents of these territories and their descendants is being studied.

Ekaterina Melnikova. Explores the former Finnish Karelia (Northern Priladozhie) and the heritage of these territories.

Elena Nikiforova. Studies the role of memory in building neighborly relations in the frontier.

Olga Belichenko. Studies memorable locations and iconic places in the representation of modern Russian residents and Finnish visitors to the city of Zelenogorsk (Terioki).
Direction 3
"Neighborness in the megalopolis"
The study of the daily culture of the neighborness: the relationship of people and spaces, ways of separating public and private, the development of neighborness solidarity, the neighborness of offline online lives. City culture is explored on the example of several types of housing - multi-storey complexes, new buildings in the outskirts and historical buildings in the city center.

a) Neighborness in historical buildings.

Olga Brednikova. Studies everyday life and neighbor relations in one of the houses in the center of St. Petersburg. The study was based on residents' diaries, interviews, and self-ethnography.

Elena Bogdanova. Analyzes the neighborness in one of the houses on the Petrograd side. The special focus of the study is reflections on the figure of power and the attitude of people to its actions, myths and facts, expectation and reality, personal versus public good.

b) Neighborness in multi-storey buildings.

Lyubov Chernysheva. Studies the relationships and life of residents in large modern arrays on the example of the North Valley residential complex

c) Digital neighborness. How does the modern neighborness manifest itself on the Internet? What practices and relationships develop between neighbors: interaction, cooperation, control?

Olga Gromasheva. Studies new forms of neighborness in large residential complexes, which appear due to the communication of residents in social media, on the example of the St. Petersburg suburb Kudrovo. Pays attention to the ratio of offline and online interactions between neighbors, as well as to the practices of self-organization of people who are living in conditions of limited social and transport infrastructure, significantly lagging behind the pace of development and population growth in the city.

d) Neighborness in communes. How are relations in modern communes formed? What are their rules, solidarity and problems?

Irina Shirobokova. Explores various forms of shared housing: coliving, co-housing, shared-living in Petersburg and Helsinki. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of everyday life, the distribution of gender roles.
